George V was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 1910 until his death in 1936. He was the first British monarch of the House of Windsor.

Although he occasionally toured the British Empire, George preferred to stay at home with his stamp collection and lived, what later biographers would consider, a dull life because of its conventionality. King George V and Queen Mary visited the Isle of Man in 1920.

Philately Week 2010

Inside #2339: Korea #1197-8O

Scott: #2339cO

To encourage stamp collecting and to broaden the stamp culture, Korea Post has designated a “philately week” every year and held the Korea Philatelic Exhibition during that week. This year, the Korea Philatelic Exhibition will be held from July 29 to August 2 at A Hall A1 (ex-Pacific Hall), COEX, under the theme of “a cool, cultural world where stamps and letters meet.”

In the 2010 Korea Philatelic Exhibition, a variety of experiences and eye-entertaining events will be presented. There will be enjoyable events involving stamps such as visiting cultural relics through stamps, printing hand-stamps as Ahn Jung-geun, the patriot, did, figuring out large-scale stamp puzzles and “I can also be the main character of the stamp” (photo zone of My Own Stamp). Five hundred frames of excellent stamp exhibits will be displayed. The “Stamp Culture Promotion Room” will showcase stamps that have won awards in the International Postage Stamp Design Contests, stamps that focus on environmental protection, stamps featuring dinosaurs, and stamps on historical figures. Also the “Korea Post Special Room” will introduce Korea Post’s footprints through stamps and posts, and will display how postman’s uniforms, postboxes and post office vans have changed through the years. The “Green Post Office” will introduce future-oriented postal systems such as e-green post, internet stamps, etc. The “Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation Room” will show the process of stamp printing. The “Stamp & Letter-Writing Culture Room” will allow visitors to directly experience writing letters and attaching stamps. This festival where every family member can experience stamps will be an unforgettable experience.

As the last installment of the “stamp in a stamp” series that have been issued since 2007, this year’s special stamp issued to commemorate the “Philately Week” features the “5000 Years of Korean Art” special stamps (featuring black and red statues of the Deva King (Vajradhara)), Korea’s first intaglio stamp. This special stamp will be a photochromic stamp that reacts to ultraviolet light: such items as “1980” ,“30” will change from a dyed color to the red color, when they are exposed to direct sunlight.

Rural Life in Laos

 Inside #1015: Laos #39O

Marc Leguay, a French artist, lived in Laos for many years. He designed most of stamps of the Kingdom of Laos (1951-1975). He had a number of concubinage and 20 children! They were all used as models for his paintings.

A reporter for Life Magazine did an article about Laos Stamps took this picture - a mistress of Leguay seem called Nang Sy and her daughter Eliane. This photo was inspired Leguay and he combined it in one of his paintings (See above) and of course in the stamp issued in 1957. Obviously the new stamp from 2010 is the mirror image without giving the credit to Leguay.

50th Anniversary of New Zealand Christmas Stamps

 Inside #????: New Zealand #353O

Stamps based on classical paintings have been popular throughout the years. The very first Christmas stamp depicted Rembrandt’s painting ‘The Adoration of the Shepherds’. Painted in 1646, it’s an intimate scene in which the shepherds kneel before the crib of baby Jesus.

 Inside #????: New Zealand #465P

In the past 50 years, New Zealand Christmas stamps have showcased various stained glass windows from New Zealand churches. The window from the First Presbyterian Church in Invercargill featured on the 1970 Christmas stamp, and now appears on the $1.20 stamp.

 Inside #????: New Zealand #692O

Christmas in New Zealand has been a prevalent theme, and the 1979 Christmas stamp featured a Pohutukawa tree in bloom along the Thames-Coromandel coast. With its brilliant display of red flowers in the summer, it is often referred to as the New Zealand Christmas tree.

 Inside #????: New Zealand #790O

Modern interpretations of the traditional Christmas story have regularly recurred in our Christmas stamp issues. The Southern Cross and the Star of Bethlehem were depicted on the 1983 Christmas stamp and are the focus of this year’s $2.40 stamp.

 Inside #????: New Zealand #1672O

Continuing the traditional Christmas theme, the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus were beautifully illustrated on the 2000 Christmas stamp, and nowappear on the $2.90 stamp.
