Flag of Laos

Laos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is a landlocked socialist republic communist state in southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar (Burma) and the People's Republic of China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Laos traces its history to the Kingdom of Lan Xang or Land of a Million Elephants, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century. After a period as a French colony, it gained independence in 1945. A long civil war ended when the communist Pathet Lao came to power in 1975.

Lou Guadagno wrote: There are no SoS in this group (Laos Sc #788-94), only the s/s, #795 is SoS. All are pre-philatelic except the 6k (cover dated 1861), and are reproductions of actual maritime mail from Montreal, Canada.

I expanded my SoS collection to include Postal Markings in 1974, when I realized, that in addition to SoS issues with postmarked stamps and covers I had already collected, many other stamps were reproducing just cancels and postal markings with significant/historical dates or were just interesting, and it just felt right to include them.  In an article I wrote which never made it to a Signal, I opened with:  "When you collect ham on stamps, ham and eggs on stamps are okay to collect, but what do you do with just eggs on stamps?  You collect them, too!".  Over the years, more and more postal bureaus recognized their importance to postal history and postal markings began to appear regularly.  Since I keep my collection in chronological order, it is quite easy to see this growth, and to me they just naturally go together.

Marc Leguay, a French artist, lived in Laos for many years. He designed most of stamps of the Kingdom of Laos (1951-1975). He had a number of concubinage and 20 children! They were all used as models for his paintings.

A reporter for Life Magazine did an article about Laos Stamps took this picture - a mistress of Leguay seem called Nang Sy and her daughter Eliane. This photo was inspired Leguay and he combined it in one of his paintings (See above) and of course in the stamp issued in 1957. Obviously the new stamp from 2010 is the mirror image without giving the credit to Leguay.
