125th Anniversary Birth of Richard E. Byrd
Inside #???? (in margin) On 1930 "South
Pole Airmail" cover : U.S. #C11
Rear
Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr., USN (25 October 1888 – 11
March 1957) was an American naval officer who specialized in feats of
exploration. He was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and
organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights, in which he served as a navigator and
expedition leader, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean,
and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. Byrd claimed that his expeditions
had been the first to reach the North Pole and the South
Pole by air. That Roald Amundsen has the first verifiable claim
to each pole is now the majority opinion among polar experts. Byrd was a
recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for heroism given by
the United States.

wrote: Technically, the U.S. Dag Hammarskold error is Sc #1203a, but the
only mint stamps are a full sheet of 50 in the American Philatelic Society
library; I'm sure the reproduced stamp is Sc #1204, the reissue with the
intentional inverted color, so technically, this is not an error!

wrote: I don't think Iceland Sc #1203 should be used as an ID # for the Bobby
Fischer personal stamp in a data base or on your site. Technically, it was
issued by Iceland in 2010 in sheets of 24 self adhesive stamps with a generic
design of a soccer player--and is illustrated as such both in Scott's and on
the WNS site-- but, there was an option to create your own personal design with
the payment of additional costs. I just checked, and it is being sold on
Delcampe with the soccer design. I think someone is liable to order #1203
sight unseen from a dealer thinking he will get the Fischer stamp. Should be:
Iceland unlisted personal stamp, 2011.
