Palau, officially the Republic of Palau, is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 800 km east of the Philippines. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the United States) in 1994, it is one of the world's youngest and smallest nations. It is sometimes referred to in English under its native name Belau.

Martin Hirschbühl wrote that the designer does not answer the question: have these Japan-stamps been in use in Palau itself during the WW II occupation?

Low wrote that according to various sources online (Wikipedia, National Postal Museum), the stamps of Japan were used in the Caroline Islands-- including Palau, from 1914 to1944, but personally, I doubted whether the commemorative stamps, like some of the SoS, were sent to the islands. The few covers I ever found in a brief search had definitive stamps, which made sense since the period was basically a military occupation.
