120th Anniversary of the first stamps of Hungary is a handsome SoS issue with its enlarged # 6 and the "faded
image" of the Mor Than essay of 1848 in
the margin, but even with a FDC added, the page in your album has a
good deal of open space.
A
way to fill this in is to add a specimen copy of the s/s, which also adds a
talking point or note for the page. When you examine the sheet
closely, you will see that the issue/print year reads 1990 instead of the
actual 1991, which gives you an actually different stamp for your collection.
In my limited research, I could find no explanation for this
variety. Checking the internet, I found that it is still
being offered at prices slightly above that of the regular s/s.
I
very happily added this s/s to my collection in early 1992, and the few times I
got to show it off to regular and SoS collectors, they
always found it interesting. If it's your first time seeing it, I
hope you do too.

Lou
wrote: An email from member Mike Knopfler, reminded me
that I had never added my identifications of the miniscule SoS on the label for Hungary #3942b to the sites.
Back
when the S/S was issued, I was drawn to the illustration of some of the 3200
frames of stamps in sliding cases mounted in the wall of the exhibition room
that contain over 500,000 stamps from around the world.
Looking
at the label, I realized that I recognized one of the tiny stamps as a s/s from
the Isle of Man, and so, loving puzzles and challenges, I hit the catalogs and
internet to see if I could identify more. It became apparent that whoever made
up the pages, followed the chronological order of issuance very carefully,
so I was able to match colors, sizes and layouts to more IOM stamps. Flush with
my success, I did some hunting for the next group just below those. I went
with the assumption that the exhibit portion was in Europe and in alphabetical
order, and since the lower frames were in front of and bigger than that of the
IOM, I tried Germany and then the German Democratic Republic, which was
correct. With a little searching, I found the same pattern of
chronological mounting of the issues, so I was again able to match the little
stamps to actual issues.
To
my disappointment, that was as far as I was able to go. There were just
too many more countries the next four frames could belong to, and I had
so many more other SoS to play with. I did
discover tho, that the designer of the label cheated
a little in his layout, by repeating the same IOM, GDR and unidentifiable
stamp frames in the balance of the smaller and smaller pullouts.
I
decided that acquiring the actual IOM and GDR stamps would make a nice addition
to just the one S/S as well as being proof of my IDs, so some month later, I
was the proud possessor of them all!
It
will take me a while to send all the individual stamp scans to the sites, so I
thought you might like to see my collection pages in the meantime.

never realised stamp designs
The
stamps marking the 93rd Stamp Day commemorate the 150th anniversary
of the birth of one of Hungary’s most important stamp designers, Ferenc Helbing. The Hungarian graphic artist, painter and
lithographer, who was born in Érsekújvár
(now Nové Zámky,
Slovakia) in 1870, was rector of Budapest’s College of Art and Design for
almost a decade. Helbing was considered a pioneer of Hungarian advertising art
whose designs included Art Nouveau book illustrations, banknotes and coins,
certificates and posters. He also designed the Crowned Madonna, which appears
upside down in a misprint of the 5,000 korona
denomination version, making this one of the most valuable Hungarian stamp
rarities.
A
portrait of Ferenc Helbing is featured in the stamp
of the souvenir sheet. Details of the graphic artist’s never realised stamp designs are shown on the stamps, the border
of the sheet and the first day covers. The artist’s signature is used for the
special postmark.
Magyar

organized stamp collecting in Hungary.

In
2025, Magyar Posta is issuing a stamp with a label to celebrate the Stamp
Museum, which received the Hungarian Heritage Award at a ceremony held at the Ráday House on 29 March 2025. Twelve thousand two
hundred and fifty copies of the thematic personalised
stamp designed by the graphic artist Imre Benedek were produced. The new
issue may be purchased at Filaposta,
philately specialist services and www.posta.hu while
stocks last.
The
Hungarian Heritage Award was established in 1995 on
the recommendation of Balázs Farkas, György Fekete, and Imre Makovecz, and has been administered by the Hungarian
Heritage and Europe Association since 2003. The Award can be
presented to individuals and institutions whose activities contribute to
the enhancement of Hungarian culture, science, economy, and moral values,
together forming the “invisible intellectual museum” of the Hungarian people.
Anyone can be nominated and the winners are selected
by a jury from the nominees proposed by members of the public. Ceremonial
cultural events are held four times a year, and seven
awards are presented on each occasion.
Founded
in 1930, the Stamp Museum keeps the most important collection of Hungarian and
international philately, faithfully preserving national values and the history
embodied in stamps. The museum helps preserve culture, knowledge, and memory
across generations. The Hungarian Heritage A ward is due recognition for its
more than nine decades of work, during which the Stamp Museum has become the
custodian of the past and the builder of the future. The stamp issue now pays
tribute to this spirit, as a symbol of the intertwining of philately, culture
and national heritage. (Source: magyarorokseg.hu,

The
elements featured on the thematic stamp with a label issued in honour of the Stamp Museum are the Hungarian Heritage
Award’s Golden Book with the Holy Crown of Hungary on its front cover and the
Stamp Museum’s special exhibition hall. The postmark shows a detail of the
Hungarian Heritage Award logo, which features the Holy Crown of Hungary.
