Egypt, officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a country mainly in North Africa, with the Sinai Peninsula forming a land bridge in Southwest Asia. Thereby, Egypt is a transcontinental country, and is considered to be a major power in North Africa, Mediterranean Region, African continent, Nile Basin, Islamic World and the Red Sea. Covering an area of about 1,010,000 square kilometers, Egypt is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west.

The National Postal Authority issued a commemorative card to celebrate “Postal Day 2026”, and the 160th anniversary of the issuance of the first Egyptian postage stamp.

In January 1866, the first set of Egyptian postage stamps, consisting of seven denominations and bearing Ottoman inscriptions, was issued during the reign of Khedive Ismail. These stamps were printed in Genoa, Italy, before printing was moved to Egypt. The paper used for stamp production at that time was made of cotton or linen. Since then, postage stamps have become an important tool for documenting significant historical events.

Since the establishment of the Egyptian Post, a series of successes have been immortalized in the history of the nation, and it has been able to be a key link in serving citizens thanks to the efforts of its employees; which has made it a model to be emulated among postal institutions around the world, and this is what has made the Egyptian Post a model to be emulated among postal bodies and institutions around the world.

Version description: The design contains two stamps from the first set of Egyptian postage stamps issued during the reign of Khedive Ismail: “5 piasters and 10 piasters”, and the number (160), in order to show the documentary elements of the celebration related to the history of Egyptian stamps, and to show the value of stamps as a cultural document and not just a postal means only.

Lou worte: All of the first seven stamps of Egypt were officially issued perforated, and the two stamps illustrated are imperf, so perfed scans should not be shown, Both Michel and Scott note imperfs exist, and Scott actually lists the two imperfs as #s 5a-6a. It is also possible that the two on the s/s are proofs which are still being offered online and in auctions. All seven stamps were produced with a variety of perforation sizes, so it is possible the designer chose to show imperfs instead of picking one of the many available types.

The above scans are of imperf proofs which only differ from the imperfs by not being on watermarked paper.
