Amelia Earhart in Suriname
June 3, 1937 was a memorable day for Suriname. On
that day, Amelia Earhart, accompanied by her navigator Fred Noonan, landed at Zanderij Airport. She would only stay short, the next
morning she had left early again.
The museum's photo archive contains a few photos
regarding the short stopover that Amelia made during her flight around the
world in Suriname at the time. The photos are in a 'diverse' album. The origin
of the photos is unknown, captions are missing. You must be able to recognize
the lady in the photo, otherwise the page you know will be turned over again
and the photo album will be closed.
Amelia, born July 24, 1897, had a boyish youth and was
very interested in women working in men's professions. Among other things, she
worked as a nurse and social worker. In 1920, for the first time in her life,
she was on a plane, which meant a real turnaround. She took flying lessons and
bought her own plane. She was the first woman to make an intercontinental solo
return flight and continued to work on improving speed and distance records. In
1932, she was the first woman to cross the ocean five years after Charles
Lindbergh. In 1936, she made preparations for a flight around the world. That
did not go without a hit or miss. The route led from Miami to San Juan, Caripito (Venezuela), Paramaribo, Fortaleza and Natal
(Brazil) and from there the crossing to Dakar in Africa. She left on June 1 to
land in Dakar on June 8.
The outlook from San Juan was not good. From there,
it was planned to fly directly to Paramaribo. However, wind speeds of 25 knots
or 29 miles per hour to Paramaribo were predicted. So she needed extra fuel,
but the runway in San Juan was too short for that and it was decided to make a
stopover in Caripito and refuel there.
On Thursday, June 3, at 08:48, they left Caripito. The flight lasted 4 hours and 50 minutes. They
landed at Zanderij at 14.38 local time.
The accompanying photo must have been taken shortly
after landing. Amelia and Fred were welcomed by Dutch and American officials.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. Early the
next morning she would fly to Fortaleza. Before leaving for Paramaribo by
train, the device was refueled. In the city, they
spent the night in the Palace hotel on Orange Square. The next morning at 07.10
they boarded again to land at Fortaleza just over 9 hours later.
Unfortunately, the trip ended in disaster. On June
29, they landed in New Guinea, from where they left on July 2 with Howland island as their destination. They never arrived there. There
are various theories circulating about the fate of Earhart and Noonan. Although
Amelia was officially declared dead in 1939, interest in her person and her
last flight always persisted. At the end of 2010, news came in the news that
bone material had been found on the island of Nikumaroro that may have belonged
to Amelia or Fred. In addition, some items were found that can sometimes be
attributed to them. Who knows, the truth will ever come to light.
The Surinamese post offices once put stamps in
circulation commemorating Amelia's stopover in Zanderij.

that I missed when it came out, maybe you did too!
A
few years ago, while looking at Surinam on-line for something else, I was
surprised to see a SoS
on a sheetlet issued to publicize a
paper currency fair, and that the designer had chosen an unusual re-valued
older issue for one value, creating the SoS.
On
April 4, 2011, Suriname issued a sheetlet of two
strips of 12 values (Surinam # 1419a-j) separated by an illustrated gutter
to publicize the 25th Paper Money Fair, to be held in Valkenburg,
Netherlands on September 23-4, 2011. An 8.00 SRG value
(Surinam #1419K) reproduced Surinam #751, issued in 1986, by overprinting
Surinam #639 from 1983 with a new inscription noting the 150th Anniversary of the Ministry of Finance Building in Paramaribo,
and a lower 30c value, the design illustrates a one Gulden
banknote from 1979.
The
complete sheetlet was rather expensive, so I
acquired one of the strips of 12, mint and on fdcs
and a mint example of the reproduced stamp, so I belatedly have two more
nice pages for my collection.
