The Republic
of Singapore is a sovereign city-state and island
country in Southeast Asia. It lies one degree north of
the equator, at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula,
with Indonesia's Riau Islands to the south and Peninsular
Malaysia to the north. Singapore's territory consists of one main
island along with 62 other islets. The country is known for its
transition from third world to first world in a single
generation, under the leadership of its founding father, Lee Kuan Yew.
Stamford
Raffles founded colonial Singapore in 1819 as a trading post of
the British East India Company. After the company's collapse in
1858, the islands were ceded to the British Raj as a crown colony.
During the Second World War, Singapore was occupied by Japan. It
gained independence from the UK in 1963 by federating with other former British
territories to form Malaysia, but separated two years later
over ideological differences, becoming a sovereign nation in 1965. After early
years of turbulence and despite lacking natural resources and
a hinterland, the nation developed rapidly as an Asian
Tiger economy, based on external trade and its workforce.

When the
Settlements became a crown colony in 1867, they had to begin issuing their own
stamps, not least because they adopted a currency based on 96 cents to a silver
dollar. Beginning on 1 September 1867, nine types in the existing stocks of
Indian stamps were overprinted with a crown and a new value in cents. Stamps
printed by De La Rue for the Settlements started arriving in December; they are
notable for a prominent white frame around the profile of

each contained portions of Singapore # 43-48 from 1959, except for the value

worte: The sheetlet contains
15 stamps and labels with large margins decorated with enlarged partial
stamps and postal markings. The size is approximately 11 3/4 x 8
1/4", the same size as the Singapore 1998 Care For Nature sheetlet, which makes both the largest ever issued. A
version of the sheetlet could be
personalized at an additional cost by replacing the show logo in
the labels with a photo.

For the
World Stamp Championship 2004 exhibition, Singapore also issued a non denominated, prepaid SoS postal card for both local and international
mailings. What is very unusual, is that the stamp is
imprinted on the picture side; where it would normally appear on the address
side is just a POSTAGE PAID notation.
The
SoS is also unusual as it is
a new design made up from the partial details of the stamps in the margins
of the regular issue and s/s. Three of them are accurate, format and
color-wise, but the King George V detail is a non-issued color and has been
reversed so that he faces in the same direction as his son, GeorgeVI in the next partial.
