Newfoundland is a large island in the Atlantic Ocean, off the east coast of North America, and the most populous part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundland was a self-governing Dominion of the British Empire from 1855 to 1933, when it became a Crown Colony. In 1949 Newfoundland united with Canada.
