Flag of Marshall Islands

A group of atolls and reefs in the North Pacific Ocean, about one-half of the way from Hawaii to Australia.

The Marshall Islands were first settled in about 1,000 BC by people of Mayo/Polynesian stock. It was visited by Spanish navigators in the 16th century seeking a westerly route to the Spice Islands. In 1788, British sea Captain John William Marshall sailed through these atolls and proclaimed them Marshall Islands.

The Marshall Islands were German possession from 1885 to 1914, Sized by Japan in 1914 and taken by US in WW II.

After almost four decades under US administration as the easternmost part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the Marshall Islands attained independence in 1986 under a Compact of Free Association. Compensation claims continue as a result of US nuclear testing on some of the atolls between 1947 and 1962. The Marshall Islands hosts the US Army Kwajalein Atoll (USAKA) Reagan Missile Test Site, a key installation in the US missile defense network.

The Centenary of the Pacific Voyages of Robert Louis Stevenson, 1888-93

Lou wrote: Stevenson visited many Pacific islands, including those of the Marshall Islands, and lived in Samoa until his death in1894.

There are no sos in the nine values, but there is a painting in the left margin by the designer, William R. Hanson, of a stamp and a stamp album relating to Stevenson's novel, "The Wrecker".  In it, clues in a stamp collection are used to solve the mystery of an abandoned shipwreck.

The stamp is a simplified painting of France #58, modified by reversing the colors in the tablets and inscriptions.

Lou wrote: The Marshall Islands block of 4, Sc #606a-d, commemorating the Centenary of the Olympic Games was actually printed in a very handsome sheetlet made up of four blocks. This sheetlet was also issued with gold inscriptions overprinted in the lower margin reading OLYMPHILEX '96, Atlanta, Georgia, July 19-August 3 and CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OLYMPIC PHILATELY with accompanying emblems.

Scott, with an incorrect description, only notes that a "small number" were overprinted, but the overprinted sheetlet is offered more often than the original.  I never could find any issue date, but I remember that it was offered later than the block.

The First Day Cover of the U.S. First Man on the Moon stamp of 1969, which set a world record for a single stamp issue of 8,743,070 First Day Covers on September 9, 1969. The master printing die for this stamp was carried to and from the moon in July, 1969. The First Day postmark reproduces the July 20, 1969, postmark of the first moon mail to which a proof of the 10¢ stamp was affixed and canceled on the moon.

The First Day Cover on the stamp shows a Fleetwood-brand cachet that was designed by Fred T. Labitzke.
