Lou wrote: Japan, not only was the first nation to issue a stamp on stamp in 1921, but was also the first to issue a postal stationery stamp on stamp. On December 1, 1948 Japan issued an imprinted postal card to note the 75th Anniversary of the First Japanese Postal Card. There was no inscription regarding the anniversary, but the indicia (the imprinted stamp) reproduced the stamp and margin detail from the corner of the very rare and expensive first Japanese postal card issued in 1873.

In both issues, the postal cards are not in the Western world horizontal format, but in the vertical, to conform with traditional Japanese tategaki script which is written in columns from top to bottom and right to left. The indicia on both is in the upper left corner of the cards.

SoS postal stationery- imprinted cards and envelopes- make a very interesting area of collecting for our topic as they are postal issues just like stamps, and reproduce many rare as well as modern stamps in their designs.

Martin Hirschbühl wrote: as you see below, the same painting, that was first shown in the "Philatelic Week 1948" and reproduced in 1996, was also used for the "Philatelic Week 1991".

What makes a difference is the reason, that the 1996 issue tends to be very similar to the first stamp of 1948; at least the upper description is almost identical.

While the issue of 1991 (on bottom) only reproduces the famous painting "Beauty Looking Back" (by Moronobu) but was not meant to be a reminiscence to that 1948 stamp.

For me, the 1996 issue barely qualified as a Type B (I always disliked that designation, and came up with my own Design Component category), and only because the Japan post made it part of the Postal History series. I included them in my collection mainly because I already owned the two 1948 art stamps to mount with them!

Martin, the matching inscriptions at the top of the issues is on all post-war (modern) Japanese stamps, and probably reads Nippon Post or something similar.
