It is imperforate, printed in black on magenta paper,
and it features a sailing ship along with the colony's Latin motto "Damus Petimus Que Vicissim" (We give and expect in return) in the
middle. Four thin lines frame the ship. The stamp's country of issue and value
in small black upper case lettering in turn surround the frame.
The 1¢ magenta was part of a series of three
definitive stamps issued in that year and was intended for use on local
newspapers. The other two stamps, a 4¢ magenta and 4¢ blue, were intended for
postage.
The issue came through mischance. An anticipated
delivery of stamps never arrived by ship in 1856, so the local postmaster,
E.T.E. Dalton, authorised a printer, Joseph Baum and
William Dallas, who were the publishers of the Official Gazette newspaper in
Georgetown, to print out an emergency issue of three stamps.

they are among my favorite discoveries-- one, because the sos
is unusual, in that it is a grey-tone image "hidden" in the
background, and second, because it also includes a commemorative cancel which I
also collect, and three, because I was able to find a cover with the stamp and
cancel to show with the s/s.

wrote: The designer used the actual photograph from the Auction catalogue,
with what looks like pieces of a stamp hinge on the surface of the stamp, so
I am sending a scan of that photo. I
was at the auction and was able to look at the front and back of the stamp
for the first time. I had seen it before several times, the last time in
1986. I was able to examine it at my leisure before the actual auction and
the stamp was very worn and much more faded since
the last time I saw it. The sale itself was very low-keyed--no excitement--
and was over in less than seven minutes. Still, I was glad I went. |
