Lou wrote: Very early on in my SOS collecting, I was attracted to the maximum cards created for the topic. I learned very soon that the best met a very specific criteria, in that the picture post card chosen to mount the stamp on should be similar, but not an exact duplicate of the stamp design, and the tying postmark should be either a first day or related in some way to both stamp and card. Technically, all the cards that show an enlargement of the reproduced stamp are not acceptable as maximum cards, but I collect them anyway (I just wish I had a good name for them). 

Originally, and maybe still today, maximum cards were not as popular in the U.S. as Europe, and many were made there by collectors and not dealers/posts, so an issue can be found with a number of different picture post cards. 

Thru the years I have acquired many cards, especially since the advent of the internet which gave me access to European dealers and collectors. Just today, I received two from France for Sc #1078 which are prime examples of correct maximum cards. One card has a photo of Le Grand Palais which is in the upper left background of the stamp and the other is a photo of one of the Les Chevaux de Marly statues which is in the upper right background of the stamp; both have the stamps tied with first day cancels. I don't know if one was made, but I am keeping an eye out for a maximum card with #1078 on the painting of "Jacob Wrestling With An Angel" by Delacroix, which is the tiny SOS (France #1054) on the stamp!

Lou wrote: This is a strange one: another France limited issue collector sheet (for the 20th Autumn Philatelic Salon in November 2011) which will not be listed by Scott.  It took some research to find out that the woman who is honored on the s/s is Jacqueline Caurat, a French television personality who appeared on many philatelic themed shows, as shown on the four nvi/20 g priority letter stamps on the sheet.

In the margin, her image replaces Ceres on France Sc # 8, so I have listed this in my data base as: France Sc # 8-- design component: frame and inscriptions only, Ceres motif replaced.

In the large black and white photo she is shown interviewing the famous French artist-writer-film director, Jean Cocteau who created the controversial Marianne stamp design—Sc #985.

2011 is the 50th anniversary of the issue of the Cocteau Marianne, and while the actual stamp is not reproduced, an outline of the Marianne profile which Cocteau drew and signed on a glass plate during the t-v interview is shown twice in the margin.  It may be a stretch, but I am also listing this in my data base as: France Sc # 985-- design component: artist’s sketch of profile only.

Lou wrote: I was finally able to find Scott #s for this s/s and booklet after several searches over the years. The listing was just for numbers with no reference to the reason for issue, which was the Third Anniversary of Green Stamps.  The French Post had created a group of reduced rate stamps for non-immediate delivery mailings.  Using this postage, the letter was specially processed and delivery was guaranteed within four days. Here in the U.S., we get the same delivery time or worse, with no discount.

Anyway, the stamps on the s/s and in the booklet are postage stamps, albeit some reissues, and not SoS, however, I consider the four stamps in the s/s margin to be SoS.  Since both are on the site, the attached scans have the Sc #s.

An atm that was issued the same day for the 68th Autumn Philatelic Salon with the same SoS; as usual, it was available with a variety of rates and usages from the p.o. meter machines.

Lou wrote: Thanks to great scans of the booklet stamps from Michael, I was able to ID most of the tiny SoS, and I'm revising the previous ID of the red Ceres stamp.  For some reason Michael's enlargement of detail 2 has a black stamp for the 75 fr while the online scans show the correct green. The big surprise was a British occupation of Mesopotamia (Iraq) overprint on a Turkish stamp! The other stamp may be from there also, but there's not much to work on.

Lou wrote: I don't consider this a SoS. The postcard was issued in 1872 without imprinted postage so a 10c stamp would have to be added. The stamp for that period would be Sc #54, and it would have been placed at the top right of the card.
