Flag of Bulgaria

Bulgaria, officially the Republic of Bulgaria is a country in south-eastern Europe. Bulgaria borders five other countries: Romania to the north (mostly along the Danube), Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south. The Black Sea defines the extent of the country to the east.

Lou Guadagno wrote: Bulgaria # 4467 is Russia #28, 8k, grey and rose.  If you see the inverted cancel next to the stamp, the year date is (18)78, the year before the same color 7k stamp was issued. Only the Scott Type A4 stamps like #28 have the value written in Cyrillic in a horizontal line below the arms of the Russian Empire--I can make out the first letter as a B which would make it восемь (eighrt).  The stamp is not rectangular as it should be, but no square Russian stamps were issued before or during this period.

Bulgaria was a province in the Ottoman Empire that revolted in 1876, and after a year of harsh reprisals resulting in great losses of life, Russia declared war on the Ottomans and by the beginning of 1878 had driven them from most of Bulgaria.  As a result of the 1878 peace treaty, Bulgaria became an autonomous principality. During this period, the Russian Empire took over the Ottoman post offices and Russian stamps were used until Bulgaria issued its first stamps in May 1879.

According to new issue info, there were 1800 perforated and 1800 imperf s/s released, both have perforated (needle) numbering, 1-1800 for the ungummed imperf and 1801-3600 for the perfed, which is printed on a special rubberized paper. The SoS are all in the margins of the s/s surrounded by caricatures of what I assume are past and/or present members of the Bulgarian Philatelic Federation.

I'm not a fan of cartoon stamp designs and I wish that the very interesting group of SoS were reproduced larger, so that they can be seen better. There are some very good looking engraved stamps from the Monarchy period.
