notation in my database long, long ago that the left margin of the Bhutan
s/s Sc #309 had a portion of a design from the first
Bhutan definitive issue of 1962, and I left it at that. After I
created my Design Component designation to rename the disliked Type Bs in the lists, I realized it also could include stamps
that only used a portion of a stamp. Looking thru my collection, I
found many such issues, and started revising my IDs to include them.
For
Bhutan #309 I added: Bhutan #1-- design component: postal runner on
mountain side, in changed colors. I had
bought a set of the 1962 issue so that I could mount a #1 and #5 with
two other Bhutan issues, but when seeing the actual #5, it rang a bell in my
head. I compared it to the margin of #309, and saw the green and lilac colors
of #5 were similar and that black accents were added
on the s/s. Back I went to my database, and changed it to:
Bhutan #5-- design component: postal runner on mountain side, in
similar colors, black accents added.

private local stamps.
The
companies that created them provided faster or needed delivery services beyond
that of the U. S. Post Office, but many were shut down
by it for infringing on its monopoly for mail handling. All but one are listed in the Scott Specialized Catalogue of U.S.
Stamps, at a wide range of values. and some have
interesting histories worth researching. One instance the Bicycle Mail
stamp was for a relay of cyclers that carried mail overnight on a 210 mile route between Fresno and San Francisco
during a rail strike. Note that the designer/printer of the stamps
created a spelling error, "Fransisco" for
"Francisco".
I
identified these 30+ years ago, and added scans much later.
Most of those were of poor quality or were reprints or counterfeits,
and so I updated many with actual major auction catalog illustrations.
I believe
the Blood & Co. City Despatch "stamp"
on the s/s to be such a reprint/counterfeit, as the typefaces and spacings do not match any in the auction catalogs I
reviewed.
