An archipelago of 700 islands and cays (which are small islands), the Bahamas is located in the Atlantic Ocean, east of Florida in the US, north of Cuba and the Caribbean, and northwest of the British dependency of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

50th Anniversary of 1^st Flight, Nassau to Miami

Lou wrote: Bahamas #288 is inscribed "First Airmail Flight Miami-Nassau 1919", which did occur on October 30, but the reproduced postal card is for the Nassau-Miami return flight on the same day! This is certainly, what the Bahamas Post intended to celebrate, but the designer, Victor Whiteley made the wording error, and it wasn't found until the stamps were issued.

The round trip flights were made by two U. S. Navy NC-4 Flying Boat aircraft; no U.S. mail was on the Miami-Nassau flight as there was no U.S. Post Office sanction for it, the flight had been arranged by the Bahamas Post Office. Various sources report that between 400 to 600 pieces of mail, mostly postal cards, were on the Nassau-Miami flight.

The reproduced postal card has the imprinted stamp cancelled with a 29 JAN 19 NASSAU p.o.receIving date and elsewhere, is the 30 JAN 19 mailing date. Going from the Bahamas to California for only one penny in postage was an incredible bargain!
