Azerbaijan was proclaimed a Soviet Socialist Republic in 1920 and a constituent republic of the USSR in 1936.

It declared independence in 1991. Postage stamps have been issued from 1919 until 1924 and again since 1992.

Azerbaijan #9 & #10 are the world's first postage stamp to depict oil wells. The main theme of these stamps, however, was the Baku Temple of Eternal Fires, a relatively modern structure that continues the ancient Zoroastrian tradition of fire temples at which the faithful worshipped. Lou wrote: Thanks to Martin and the high quality scan he sent me, I have finally been able to add to the two Ids I made initially.  The background of the stamp and s/s have Italian stamped mail and postal stationery that have no relationship to Azerbaijan. The designer must have found a scan with multiple old Italian envelopes and stationery and decided it would fill in the background nicely, never thinking someone would look closer and attempt to Id them.  So far, for several of the stationery scans, I could only find used examples, and the Ids will have to wait until I visit the Collectors Club library in September and check the Higgins & Gage catalogs.
