[Flag of St. Helena]

An island in the southern Atlantic Ocean, northwest of St. Helena (900 miles from Liberia). Discovered by the Portuguese on Ascension Day in 1501, it was taken by the British in 1815. Ascension Island is a British Overseas Territory which, together with St. Helena and Tristan da Cunha, forms a single territorial grouping under the sovereignty of the British Crown. The group of islands is presided over by a single Governor who is resident on St. Helena. The Governor is represented on Ascension by the Administrator.
