Inside #1397: Private Mt. Rigi Hotel StampO
Swiss hotel post
In the
Swiss mountains, remoted hotels often issued their own stamps (comparable
stamps from Austria, Romania and Hungary) to carry the post from the hotel to
the nearest post office, examples are Rigi Kaltbad, Belalp, Maderanerthal, Rigi
Scheideck etc.
The Swiss
stamps were used for about 20 years. In 1864, the first Swiss hotel postal
service functioned with its own stamps: Rigi-Kalibad. From September 26,
The
hotel’s aim was clear: provide more service to its customers. So, important
hotels had their own mailman who brought the mail to the official post office
down in the valley and from there also brought back the mail to the hotel.
For this
service, the hotel charged a minimal fee, usually 5, 10 or 15 rappen, with
which the extra postage by means of a private stamp was settled. The official
post office then stuck on the normal postage.
Unused,
there are but a few hotel stamps rarely to be found. On postal items and
especially on complete letters, such stamps are, without any exception, very
expensive and wanted.

LIVINGSTON POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL, ON OR OFF COVER. Livingston is the county
seat of Sumter County, Alabama, lying on the Selma and Meriden Railroad line
about 130 miles north of Mobile, near the state's western border. Official
records name Stephen W. Murley as the Livingston
postmaster in 1861, while other sources attribute the provisional stamp to
another postmaster, Robert F. Houston. The Livingston provisional is known used

showed up on the Bombay Philatelic site for December 2024. It does not appear
anywhere else I would expect it--IGPC, WOPA +, Colnect.
Altho Bombay does not normally sell such items, I
believe this is another IGPC prepared-never issued "dump", which have
appeared on the market from time to time, and is NOT an official issue. I
would imagine it was to be part of a series on philatelic aviation
history releases from various IGPC client nations.
I
have several IGPC prepared-never issued items in my collection, which I bought
before I found out about their actual status. Some are very
interesting.
In
addition to a multitude of Swiss private and semi-private air flight labels
(some of which were used on actual flights), there are two SoS--
the first two Swiss airmail stamps issued in 1919-1920, Switzerland Sc #C1-C2. very handsome overprinted
stamps. Scott lists stamps in value order and not in chronological order,
and #C2 was issued the year before #C1 which was
necessary as the Swiss post had lowered the cost of an airmail letter.
