Flag of New Caledonia

New Caledonia is a "sui generis (unique) collectivity" of France located in the region of Melanesia in the southwest Pacific. It comprises a main island (Grande Terre), the Loyalty Islands, and several smaller islands. Approximately half the size of Taiwan, it has a land area of 18,575.5 square kilometers (7,172 sq mi). The population was 244,410 inhabitants as of January 2008 official estimates. The capital and largest city of the territory is Nouméa. The currency is the CFP franc. Since 1986 the United Nations Committee on Decolonization has included New Caledonia on the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories. New Caledonia is set to decide whether to remain within the French Republic or become an independent state in a referendum to be held some time between 2014 and 2019.

Lou wrote: This note about the New Caledonia personalized issue has been kicking around in my drafts since early December. I had just found it online when Mike wrote and asked "can you identify if the image in front of the nose of the aircraft is a stamp?". The scans were poor and I thought that maybe it was a b/w photo. A day or two later, I took another look, and decided it was a stamp.  I did a quick run thru New Caledonia in the catalog, and couldn't find it; I tried France, and five minutes later I had the ID.  Back on the internet, I tried to find a good quality mint scan of France #775 issued in 1955, but all I could  find were cancelled or poor quality scans, so I left it  in my drafts until today, when I tried again, and found  a really nice scan.

By the dates listed on the stamps, they were probably issued in July, 2022. There have been a number of these self adhesive personalized stamps issued either for the yearly Autumn and/or Collectors Salons, many of which were SoS.  They are not listed in Scott's, but are in Michel and Yvert.  I have several in my collection and others in my database, and if you want to see those, let me know and I will send them on.

Thanks to Lou Guadagno
