Guadagno wrote "This is not an "error". Collectors liked
the idea of an artist's mistake, so they ignored the debunking of the
"error", which followed soon after it was first reported in the
philatelic press.
The
"sixth finger" is only the inside of F.D.R.'s shirt cuff, as you can
see in the photo the stamp design was taken from. The artists reproduced
F.D.R. from the photo quite accurately, but probably would
have inscribed another few lines to delineate the shadow inside the
cuff better, if they knew the derision they would face
later."

Wrote: Martin's email reminded me that I never advised my IDs for the stamps on
the museum left doorway-- mainly because of the two images that have eluded me
all these years, the third stamp in the top row, and the second stamp in the
fourth row. In all the engraved stamps showing the Museum entrance, the
images are much simplified, but there are actual stamps (and coins) in the
panels. I emailed the Museum years ago, asking for a scan of a
photo of the left panel, but got no reply. Then, some time ago, two
friends visited Monaco and I gave them instructions to take
pictures for me, but they photographed the wrong museum! I'm sure a photo will let me ID my mystery stamps, so maybe
someday.... However, attached are the stamps I have IDs (and actual stamps)
from top to bottom.
Michael
later found a better picture of the entrance, and added his candidate for the
second stamp on the fourth row.

yet been investigated. All I can say is that the top left blob on the left part
of entrance (on 10.00) seems to be the Monaco-stamp of 1980, based upon Ingres
famous nude-painting "the source".
The
others? No idea...... While on the 5.00 stamp at
right, the background (ancient printing) is quite similar to the farewell-issue
of our former Swiss postal-printing-house in Berne (1930 to 2002), I guess, it's not a SOS, but both issues are based on the original
artwork by A. Bosse (see below).
The
middle stamp (10.00) is surely a SOS.....but not a
Martin-SOS.....while the one at right (5.00) is probably no SOS
And
I say – Martin is right, but I like those stamps and there is some connection -
so I decided to let them stay…:)

copies of U.S. #s 1-2 for the Pacific ’97 commemorative stamp and then
compounded that by changing the colors too.
Then,
about a year ago, I happened to come across an auction catalog of U. S. stamps
on line, and while going thru it for scans to copy for my files, I read that
various color proofs had been prepared for the first U. S. stamps. I
decided to do some further research, and after several attempts I found two
proofs that closely match those on the Monaco stamp. It can’t be a coincidence
that the artist changed the colors and just happened to pick two odd colors
that proofs were made in— he must have been aware of the trial color proofs.
These are listed in the Scott Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps.

wrote: For years, I was unhappy with the Club's checklist Type B category (and
its name), as many listed issues were what I considered to be
reprintings or only contained portions of
previous stamps. For the most part, I ignored them, but little
by little, I came across issues I wanted in my collection. Type B was a bit of
a catch-all title and included stamps I definitely would not collect, so I
came up with a new named category-- SoS Design
Components (SoSDC)-- for those I felt should be in
the listings. With it, I could identify the exact portions of stamps that had
been reproduced, separating that from the superfluous other areas. With
these parameters I also found many other issues
that I added to my listings and collection.
Monaco
is the source of two:
Monaco: #2041 and Slania Prince Rainier III essay.
In
1997, Monaco issued Sc #2041 to
commemorate Prince Rainier's 1996 ASCAT award for his contributions to philately.
In addition to the award cup and a view of the entrance to the
Monaco Philatelic Museum, was a portrait of Rainier. I assumed the artwork was
from a previous issue and searched my catalogs for it with
no success, and so just made a note of the stamp. Some
time later, while searching on line for info on another Monaco
stamp, I came across a reference that the portrait was from an engraving by Czeslaw Slania that had not been accepted for use for a previous issue, so under
my new SoSDC guidelines, I entered Sc #2041 to my collection/lists as reproducing a
stamp essay. I noted that the portrait was printed
in offset lithography and that the small image did not reproduce the fine lines
of the Slania engraving very well. Copies of the Slania essay have been offered on
line at prices I could not afford, but I added a scan of one to my image
database.
Monaco: #2396
Then,
in 2005, after the death of Rainier, a very handsome memorial souvenir sheet, Sc #2396, was issued, and the Slania
engraved essay was used as the main design, recess printed
as it should be. In my data base, I referenced the
essay, but since the essay had appeared on a previous stamp, the S/S was a SoSDC and I listed Sc #2041 DC as
the stamp shown. On my Vario page,
I "mounted" both #2396 and #2041 which I think show the
difference in the two printing techniques very well..

I
like this very good looking S/S and the fact that identifying
the SoS was an added small challenge.
It
also reminded me that I have two other Monaco issues with a SoS not identified on our

Monaco '99, only the design motif of the museum, without perf'ed
