70th Anniversary, First Rocket Mail Flight in Cuba

Inside #5031: Cuba 1939 Rocket Stamp EZ #1A1

Lou wrote: In the background is a partial sheet of the private rocket flight stamp which is also on the first (left) cover on the sheet. I own the stamp and a rocket flight cover—but without the autographs. The Cuban P.O. allowed imperf non-postal 25c Matanzas provincial council stamps to be overprinted PRIMER COHETE AEREO—1939 to be used on the covers for the first trial flight of October 1, 1939.  Only 60 covers were flown, and now sell for $ 300+.

Inside #5031: Cuba Rocket mail 2nd trial EZ #1C1

Lou wrote: The next cover on the sheet is one of only 21 flown on the second trial flight of October 3—these covers sell for $600 and up, and are rarely offered in auction!  I’m still looking for a scan of the mint stamp (E-Z 2A1) on the cover.  It appears to be just a gummed, red bordered sticker that you would use on a file folder with C1/25C added using a rubber stamp.  Somewhere I have a b/w catalog photo of the stamp if you want me to look for it.

#C31 Inside #5031: Cuba #C31O

Lou wrote: The third cover has a pair of C31 which is the world’s first officially issued rocket mail stamp.  I have never seen a cover with more than one stamp—I own the same flight cover except with a single stamp, and again, without autographs.  On October 15, 1939, in front of hundreds of spectators and government officials, the rocket carrying 1500 covers literally fizzled and only went about 15 yards before crashing. Still, the covers are wanted by rocket mail enthusiasts and sell for $ 250 +, I bought mine about 25 years ago for half that.

How I got it is a great story.  It was my last day at the international show in Washington, D.C., and I had literally spent my last dollar at a Cuban stamp dealer’s booth, when I spied the cover.  I asked him if he would put it away for me to purchase after I got home, and he said no.  Disappointed, I started to leave and he stopped me and asked, “Don’t you want the cover?”  I said I did, but had no money, check or credit card to pay for it.  He handed it to me and told me to send him the money when I had it. I had never met or done business with him before, and he didn’t even want my name and address!  Non stamp collector friends with other hobbies are amazed when I tell them how many stamp dealers did business just based on trust!  I wouldn’t have many of the best items in my collection if not for dealers like him.

The black rectangle is a cachet, not a stamp

Lou wrote: Below the three covers is a souvenir sheetlet produced by the rocket group with the same inscriptions and design as the cachet on the C31 cover.

The most used catalog #s for the first two stamps and covers are the Ellington-Zwisler Rocket Mail Catalogue “E-Z” listings. The E-Z #s are on the scans.  No regular catalog lists the stamps.

Traditions of Czech Stamp Production

#979 Inside #3410: Czechoslovakia #980P

The tradition of Czech stamp design is commemorated this year by Anna Podzemná's stamp of the issue The 15th Anniversary of the Czechoslovak Liberation. This issue of five postage stamps which appeared in 1960 contained two stamps by A. Podzemná created in cooperation with the engraver Jiří Švengsbír. Podzemná's work is represented by the 30 h stamp featuring a little girl eating a cake.

The painter Anna Podzemná-Suchardová (1909-1996) studied at the school of arts and crafts UMPRUM and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (A. Hofbainer, M. Švabinský) and at Académie Julien in Paris. She was the author of numerous paintings and drawings of folk types in the Valašsko region. Her numerous stamp designs proved her quality of an outstanding portrait and figure painter. She used her sense of figurative composition mainly in designing stamps with sport themes. She is the author of multi-stamp issues on Czechoslovak Spartakiads, stamps featuring a number of sport disciplines and series of stamps on several Olympic Games. Her designs are full of dynamism and sport elegance.

The drawer, graphic designer and engraver J. Švengsbír (1921-1983) graduated from the school of arts and crafts UMPRUM in Prague (A. Strnadel) and in the course of his 30 years' cooperation with the postal administration he created over 250 engravings and won a number of prizes for them. A tribute was paid to him in the 2004 issue of The Tradition of Czech Stamp Design.

The first-day cover of the issue features a pasqueflower from the 60 h stamp commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Lidice and Ležáky massacre, designed by A. Podzemná in 1962. The postage stamp is issued both in the form of sheets and as a book of 8 stamps and 4 coupons.

The young girl of Bora Bora

#180 Inside #1014: Fr. Polynesia #180O

When the US Army left Bora Bora after the war, its inhabitants did not see it as a blow dealt by fate. After that experience, they found themselves not richer or poorer than before. And they took it with philosophy: “It’s over now. It was like a beautiful dream…” But the road of tourism had opened and the film industry had now taken hold of the wonderful beaches and of the island’s breathtaking lagoon.

People came from the four corners of the world to shoot a documentary or a film sequence. A young girl named Tumata Teutau appeared in a documentary by Landry, the brother-in-law of the French Overseas Ministry of the time. Like many young girls of Bora Bora, she was part of a dance group which kept winning prizes at the July Festival in Tahiti and in which Tumata particularly stood out. In 1955, she was a model for photographer Adolphe Sylvain but it was a photograph extracted from Landry’s film that called the attention of engraver Pierre Gandon, who exquisitely drew the famous “Young girl of Bora Bora”, a stamp which received the Philatelic Art Grand Prize in 1955.

Stamp Day

#1 Inside #B1019: Bavaria #1O

The stamp shows one of the most famous letters of German philately - the Eichstaett (Oaktown) letter. Discovered in 1959 in the Upper Bavarian Eichstaett and is equipped with a six-block of the first German postage stamp - the black ones ("schwarzer Einser") of the Kingdom of Bavaria. These stamps released on 1 November 1849.

"Black ones" are very rare.

The Ten sheets of this edition has a "security perforation"  between each pair of a horizontal pair in the form of an oak leaf. This means, that there are 2 types of stamps - one with the "hole" right, one left - as shown.

There are brands , such Spezialstanzung on the left or the right face.

In addition there is a nice postal stationery with the same stamp printed thereof, also with the "hole" for no reason. At left is a painting "Der Posthof 1850" (mail court) by Pius A.F.Messerschmitt

Lou wrote: This is the kind of ID you can only make if you’ve seen the stamp before or come across it looking for something else.  In this case, it looked familiar and I thought it was a Chinese stamp.  I also decided the stamp was upside down with value numerals in the lower left corner (I could make out a partial “8”) so I looked in my old International Part II, and found some used Nationalist China Sun Yat-sen stamps with the same color graduations and frame—one of them was the matching 800 $ carmine red-- Sc # 893.  Also, if you look inside the triangle formed by the three stamps that overlap #893, you can see a white arc and line which are the reflections in Sun’s hair.
